Design of robust network topology is an essential issue in large-scalemulti-hopwireless networks since data packets are forwarded through intermediate nodes between source and destination, especially in the presence of non-cooperative nodes. Traditionally, topology design aims at generating network topology with high node degree, maximum throughput, and mitigation of malicious attacks. In this paper, we formulate a novel topology control problem as achieving optimal topology which maximizes network robustness against data forwarding distortion (DFD) in which a relay node may be compliant in route discovery, but dropor delay packets as non-cooperative nodes. Suchnodemisbehavior candegrade network performance dramatically, without being detected by routing protocols and countermeasures. Therefore, we propose to design a network topology and data forwarding algorithms, namely PROACtive, in order to distribute data packets among cooperative nodes only, subject to k-connectivity constraint. Through analysis and simulations, we show that there exists a trade-off between achieving network robustness and k-connected with high probability (w.h.p.). By using distributed measurement schemes, data packets can be forwarded with low message complexity H(N), and improves network goodput significantly in different network scenarios. 2011 Elsevier B.V. Energy Efficiency and Reliability in Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks Using Cuckoo Optimizer Algorithm

Energy efficiency and reliability are widely understood to be one of the dominant considerations for Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks (UWSNs). In this paper, in order to maintain energy efficiency and reliability in a UWSN, Cuckoo Optimization Algorithm (COA) is adopted that is a combination of three techniques of geo-routing, multi-path routing, and Duty-Cycle mechanism. In the proposed alg...

A multi-hop PSO based localization algorithm for wireless sensor networks

A sensor network consists of a large number of sensor nodes that are distributed in a large geographic environment to collect data. Localization is one of the key issues in wireless sensor network researches because it is important to determine the location of an event. On the other side, finding the location of a wireless sensor node by the Global Positioning System (GPS) is not appropriate du...

Target Tracking Based on Virtual Grid in Wireless Sensor Networks

One of the most important and typical application of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is target tracking. Although target tracking, can provide benefits for large-scale WSNs and organize them into clusters but tracking a moving target in cluster-based WSNs suffers a boundary problem. The main goal of this paper was to introduce an efficient and novel mobility management protocol namely Target Tr...

An Adaptive LEACH-based Clustering Algorithm for Wireless Sensor Networks

LEACH is the most popular clastering algorithm in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). However, it has two main drawbacks, including random selection of cluster heads, and direct communication of cluster heads with the sink. This paper aims to introduce a new centralized cluster-based routing protocol named LEACH-AEC (LEACH with Adaptive Energy Consumption), which guarantees to generate balanced cl...

Performance Analysis and Improvement of Express Forwarding in Wireless Mesh Networks

Metropolitan Wi-Fi based wireless mesh networks are being deployed in large cities such as Philadelphia, Houston, Taipei and Hongkong, to provide convenient Internet access for government and public users. However, since IEEE 802.11 was originally designed for single-hop communications, there are significant problems when it is used in multi-hop networks, among them are inefficient use of the m...
